Anytime Fitness franchisees, along with hundreds of managers and personal trainers, corporate staffers and Waxing The City franchisees, set two world records and missed a third earlier this month at the Self Esteem Brands annual conference in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Led by personal trainer Josh Cox, 1,224 Anytime Fitness franchisees and employees and Self Esteem Brands colleagues did squats for one full minute, breaking the old world record of squats by 665 people. Moments later, at the speed skating oval at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center, 1,214 members of the same group broke the previous record of 900 for most people in one location doing jumping jacks for one minute. The group just missed the world record of 1,323 people who planked for a full minute.

Anytime Fitness says written and video documentation of the new records will be submitted to Guinness World Records for official verification in the coming days.

Anytime Fitness franchisees from 28 different countries attended the conference, attended by a total of 2,080 people. (Self Esteem Brands is the parent company of Anytime Fitness and Waxing the City.) Mike Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic hockey team, made an appearance at the conference, held Sept. 8-10.

Hockey was a major theme this year, as Anytime Fitness corporate employees recreated the 1980 Miracle on Ice win by the United States over the Soviet Union. In a video starring Anytime Fitness co-founder Chuck Runyon as USA coach Herb Brooks and co-founder Dave Mortensen as an assistant coach in a red wig, the Anytime Fitness Global Team squared off in a hockey match against “the dominant forces of inactivity and low self-esteem,” including stress, apathy, lack of sleep, sitting disease and “gyms that serve pizza,” an obvious jab at Planet Fitness.

Andy Gundlach was honored at the conference as the Anytime Fitness Club Operator of the Year for the third time in six years. Gundlach owns and operates 29 gyms in the Madison, Wis., area. His 30th gym is scheduled to open next month in Evansville, Wis.

Three Anytime Fitness members were honored as National Member Success Story winners: Lydia Dzuibanek of Beaumont, Calif.; Matt Pietro of Hudson Falls, N.Y.; and Joe Yeakley of Lindale, Texas.

Next year’s Anytime Fitness/Self Esteem Brands conference will be Sept. 14-16, 2017, in Palm Springs, Calif. Until then, here’s a recap of this year’s conference:
